This small revelation took me by surprise last month while I was shopping for a birthday gift for my brother. Posted by Dr-PeteOn August 1, Google (via Danny Sullivan's @searchliaison account) announced that they released a "broad core algorithm update." Algorithm trackers and webmaster chatter confirmed multiple days of heavy ranking flux, including our own MozCast system: Temperatures peaked on August 1-2 (both around 114°F), with a 4-day period of sustained rankings flux (purple bars are all over 100°F). While this has settled somewhat, yesterday's data suggests that we may not be done. August 2nd...

Evergreen trees are a symbol of life and renewal because they never lose their leaves; they stay green year-round. Tell that to anyone who has dragged a Christmas tree to the garbage on New Year’s Day. The truth is, evergreen trees are part of an ecosystem. When they’re rooted and cared for, they thrive and the whole forest benefits. Cut one down and take it home, and it won’t be green for long. Evergreen content is the same way. We tend to think of it as stand-alone pieces of content that...

I’m not a designer. I’m not artsy. I didn’t even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night. I’m a writer to the core. But, as much I love words, I recognize that they don’t jump off the screen and grab people’s attention. Let’s face it: even the most beautiful prose is pretty ugly, from an aesthetic standpoint. You’re not going to find a framed portrait of blocky text hanging at the Guggenheim anytime soon. As a marketer who is admittedly lacking in design skills, I’ve done an awful lot of...

If everyone performed their Internet searches in the same way, then search engine optimization (SEO) wouldn’t be the art and science it is today. It’s easy to forget that behind your search engine optimization (SEO) strategy there are not only backlinks, blogs, images, metrics and conversion rates – but people. Probably the single best video to watch to understand the power of Google & Facebook (or even most of the major problems across society) is this following video about pleasure versus happiness. In constantly seeking pleasure we forego happiness. The "feed" based central aggregation networks are just like slot machines in your pocket: variable reward circuitry which self-optimizes around exploiting your flaws to eat as much attention as possible. The above is not an accident. It is, rather,...

Grist Much like publishers, employees at the big tech monopolies can end up little more than grist. Products & product categories come & go, but even if you build "the one" you still may lose everything in the process. Imagine building the most successful consumer product of all time only to realize:'The iPhone is the reason I'm divorced,' Andy Grignon, a senior iPhone engineer, tells me. I heard that sentiment more than once throughout my dozens of interviews with the iPhone's key architects...

Recently rank checker started hanging on some search queries & the button on the SEO Toolbar which launched rank checker stopped working. Both of these issues should now be fixed if you update your Firefox extensions. If ever the toolbar button doesn't work one can enable the Menu bar in Firefox, then go under the tools menu to the rank checker section to open it. Years ago we created a new logo for rank checker which we finally got around to changing it today. :) Categories: seo tools

Last August I wrote a blog post about how attention merchants were sucking the value out of online publishing. In it I noted how the Yahoo! Directory disappeared & how even DMOZ saw a sharp drop in traffic & rankings over the past few years. The concept of a neutral web is dead. In its place is agenda-driven media. Politically charged misinformed snippets. Ads cloaked as content. Public relations propaganda. Mostly correct (but politically insensitive) articles being "fact checked" where a...
